"At last I know what love is really like." Virgil

She came from the east and he from the west
this forbidden love story was put to the test
His ways were new and hers were of old
a desert love song starts to unfold

In from the night on a caravan
to the oasis he had come
She knew nothing of this stranger, this man
Not his name or where he was from

Cowboy hat, alligator boots
and a smile as big as his heart
He was so different from the men she knew
her own were so somber and dark

She saw him in the market square
his smile had caught her eye
Even from behind her mask of veils
her interest she could not hide

He looked at her and gave a "Howdy Ma'am"
then politely tipped his hat
Quickly she cast her eyes to the ground
their first meeting was as simple as that

In the market place she looked for him
This tall and handsome man
And he would come to see her each day
His desert rose amongst the sand

As months went by in secret they met
their love for each other growing strong
This beauty with eyes as dark as the night
To love someone else would be wrong

Then came the day she dreaded would come
a marriage arranged from her birth
Her family, their honor, or her secret love
whom would she have to put first

As the days wore on and with tears in her eyes
a decision she must make, and she knew
To give in to love or family honor
her heart was breaking in two

She went to the square the very next day
And waited patiently for him to show
No sign of his smiling face in the crowd
so to their secret place she must go

Heart beating fast she reaches the spot
where their love they vowed till they die
And there laid a rose and a tear laden note
under the hot desert sky

"I love you my Arabian Princess"
were the words he wrote in his tears
"Never another will claim my heart

if I live for a thousand years

I know the love you carry for me
is as pure as your unblemished soul
My only regret is not saying goodbye
and having you here now to hold

But I know this would have been too hard
for myself as well as for you
The decision you had to make, it is done,
I have made that decision for you

You will always be my one true love
as my sadness today starts and grows
No one could ever replace you my dear,
my heart, "My Sweet Desert Rose"
